Sandblasting — abrasive blasting — is the surface preparation that decides whether a coating lasts. The single most important thing to know about the price: industrial, spec'd blasting costs far more than the numbers online calculators show, because those numbers are for light residential work — a different job entirely.
Residential vs industrial — the number that matters

Ranges are indicative and depend on the project, prep grade and access. For a plant, refinery or fabrication job, only the $8–$16 industrial range is relevant — the low figures blend in residential work that has nothing to do with spec'd structural steel. Most industrial projects total roughly $400–$12,500 depending on area and scope.
Why industrial is 2–3× the headline number
The gap is real work, not markup:
- Prep grade. Hitting SSPC-SP 6 (commercial) vs SP 10 (near-white) changes labor and abrasive consumption significantly — spec'd grades are verified, not eyeballed.
- Surface condition. Heavy rust, mill scale or multiple old coating layers take far longer than light surface rust.
- Containment & disposal. Environmental containment and spent-abrasive disposal add real cost, especially near sensitive or in-service sites.
- Scale & access. Height, confined spaces and scaffolding on large structures add labor that a small job never carries.
- Abrasive type. Garnet, coal slag, steel grit and aluminum oxide each carry a different cost and produce a different anchor profile.
The four multipliers that move a blasting quote
The base rate is only the starting point. On industrial work, four factors reliably move the number — these are the same multipliers our sandblasting cost calculator applies:

They stack. Two examples on the same steel, at the industrial $8–$16 base:
- 5,000 sq ft, shop, SP-6, no containment → roughly $40,000–$80,000 ($8–$16/sq ft).
- 5,000 sq ft, field, SP-10, containment required → roughly $55,700–$156,000, or about $11–$31/sq ft.
Same area, same steel, up to 2× the per-foot cost — which is why "cost per square foot" alone never answers the question. Note also the floor: mobilization and setup mean most industrial jobs start around $400 no matter how small the area.
SSPC prep grades — what you are actually buying
The prep grade in the spec is the single line item that most changes the price, because it defines how much has to come off the steel. From cheapest to most expensive:

Two things buyers routinely miss. First, SP 1 (solvent cleaning) comes before blasting on oily or contaminated steel — blasting drives contamination into the profile rather than removing it. Second, the spec also names a surface profile (anchor pattern) that the coating manufacturer requires; the abrasive has to be chosen to hit it, and it is verified with replica tape, not by eye. A quote that never mentions the grade or the profile is not priced against your spec.
Abrasive media — the cost driver behind the cost driver
Media is where a lot of the price difference between two honest bids comes from, because the cheap media is single-use and the expensive media is recycled:

On a site where spent abrasive counts as regulated waste, disposal can outweigh the media price — which is why the cheapest media does not always give the cheapest project.
Turning your structure into blast square feet
Blasting is priced per square foot of surface, not footprint. Before asking for a number, get the area right:
- Tank shell (exterior or interior): π × diameter × height.
- Tank floor or fixed roof: π × diameter² ÷ 4.
- Pipe or vessel run: π × diameter × length, per line.
- Structural steel: surface area does not follow tonnage in any useful way — ask the fabricator or detailer for the surface-area take-off, and confirm whether it includes the back faces of flanges and connection plates.
Also confirm what is excluded: masked flanges, machined surfaces, existing sound coating left in place. Two bids on different area assumptions look like different prices when they are actually the same rate.
How to compare blasting bids
An itemized industrial quote should show these lines. If any are missing, the low bid is usually low because it left one out:
- Mobilization and demobilization, stated separately from the per-foot rate.
- The SSPC prep grade and the required surface profile, with the inspection method.
- Containment scope: enclosure type, air handling, and who collects the spent abrasive.
- Disposal: volume, waste classification and who holds the manifest.
- Standby and weather terms — field blasting stops in rain and high humidity.
- The blast-to-coat window. Prepared steel flash-rusts quickly, so the schedule has to put primer on the surface the same shift; a quote that blasts far ahead of the coating crew is quietly pricing rework.
Why prep is the whole job
Coating failures are almost always prep failures. Paying for the right blast grade is what makes the coating that follows actually reach its rated service life — the cheapest part of the job to skimp on, and the most expensive to get wrong.
