The Gulf Coast corrosion factor
Houston sits in a high-corrosivity coastal environment (approaching ISO 12944 C5-M): chloride-bearing marine air combined with heat and humidity accelerates rusting far faster than inland sites. For immersion and aggressive atmospheric service — common across Houston's refining and petrochemical corridor — that usually means abrasive blasting to SSPC-SP 10 (near-white) rather than a commercial SP 6, with a 2–4 mil anchor profile for the coating that follows.

For coastal atmospheric steel, a common high-performance stack is an inorganic or organic zinc-rich primer, an epoxy high-build intermediate, and an aliphatic polyurethane topcoat — the zinc gives cathodic protection against chloride, the epoxy adds barrier thickness, and the polyurethane holds gloss and color under the sun. Tanks and vessels in immersion service instead take a high-build or novolac epoxy lining over the same near-white blast. None of it performs without the prep grade underneath it.
