What fireproofing contractors do

Fireproofing contractors apply passive fire protection to structural steel so it retains its load-bearing strength for a rated period (commonly 1–3 hours) in a fire, giving occupants time to evacuate and the structure time to survive. The work is specified to a tested UL assembly and verified by thickness inspection — the applicator's QA is what makes the rating real.

Entity note: passive fire protection is built into the structure (unlike active systems such as sprinklers); DFT = dry film thickness; IBC = International Building Code; UL assemblies are the tested product-and-thickness combinations that carry a rating.

Where it's required

The IBC requires fire-resistance ratings for structural steel based on building type, height and occupancy — in commercial, industrial, high-rise and assembly buildings. Your project's rating (e.g. 1-hour columns, 2-hour) is set by code and the structural design.

What is fireproofing?
Fireproofing is passive fire protection for structures — coatings or materials that slow the heating of load-bearing members in a fire so the structure keeps its strength longer. The main types are intumescent and cementitious (spray-applied).
What is fireproofing in construction?
Applying fire-resistive systems to structural steel (and other members) to meet the fire-resistance ratings required by building codes (IBC/UL). It is done either as spray-applied material (SFRM/cementitious) or as intumescent coating.
What is cementitious fireproofing?
A cement- or gypsum-based fire-protection material applied by spray (SFRM). It is thicker and cheaper than intumescent but rougher, so it is used where appearance doesn't matter — decks, joists and concealed members.
What is SFRM fireproofing?
SFRM = spray-applied fire-resistive material — sprayed fireproofing, usually cementitious or mineral-fiber based. It is the high-volume method for decks and beams in commercial construction.
How does fireproofing work?
The fire-resistive layer insulates the steel, slowing its rise toward the ~550°C critical temperature at which it loses load capacity. That delay provides the rated time for evacuation and firefighting.
How much does fireproofing cost?
It depends on the system (intumescent costs more than cementitious), the required rating in hours, and the members' section factor. Cementitious is generally the lower-cost option for concealed steel.
Intumescent vs cementitious — which should I choose?
Choose intumescent for exposed architectural steel where appearance and a thin profile matter; choose cementitious for concealed steel where cost matters and looks don't. Both achieve the required rating when applied to a tested assembly.
Is fireproofing required by code?
Often yes. The International Building Code (IBC) requires fire-resistance ratings for structural elements based on building type, height and occupancy — met with tested passive fireproofing systems.
