Pipeline Coating: Types, Systems & Corrosion Protection

Pipeline coating protects buried and subsea pipe from corrosion and mechanical damage and works alongside cathodic protection (CP) to reach the multi-decade design life pipelines require. The coating is the primary barrier; CP is the backup that protects the steel wherever the coating has a defect.
Why pipelines are coated
Steel pipe corrodes in soil and water, and a leak is expensive and dangerous. Coating provides: external corrosion protection, resistance to mechanical damage during burial, and — critically — CP compatibility so the two systems work together rather than against each other.
Entity note: FBE = fusion-bonded epoxy; 3LPE/3LPP = three-layer polyethylene/polypropylene; CP = cathodic protection; a holiday = a discontinuity/defect in the coating.

Sources: temperature limits per ISO 21809-1 (3-layer PE/PP) and ISO 21809-2 (FBE); above ~110°C the PE outer layer and adhesive soften, reducing peel strength and raising cathodic disbondment — hence 3LPP or high-Tg FBE for hotter lines. Confirm against the manufacturer's data and project spec.
Internal linings
Thin internal (flow) coatings reduce friction to improve throughput and gas-flow efficiency, and protect the bore against product-side corrosion — common in gas transmission and some liquid lines.
Field joint coating & rehab
The mainline coating is plant-applied, but field joints are coated on site after welding — a common weak point. Options include liquid epoxy/PU, heat-shrink sleeves and field-applied FBE, all requiring proper surface prep and a compatible system to avoid becoming the failure point. Rehabilitation coatings restore aging in-service lines.
Standards
Pipeline coating is governed by NACE/AMPP practices and ISO 21809 (external coatings for buried/submerged pipelines), with the coating specified alongside the CP design — never in isolation.
