The formula

Surface area per linear foot = π × OD

with OD in feet — or π × OD(in) ÷ 12 when the diameter is in inches.

That is the lateral surface of a cylinder: circumference × length. Nothing else is involved. Wall thickness does not enter it, because the coated surface is the outside of the pipe.

π × OD is exact — this is arithmetic, not an estimate.

Why π × radius² is the wrong formula here

The mistake appears in published cost guides often enough to be worth naming. π × radius² is the area of a circle — the cross-section you would see if you cut the pipe through. It answers questions about flow area or how much fluid the pipe holds. It does not describe any surface a coating crew will ever touch.

The two are easy to confuse because both come out in square feet and both involve π and the diameter. On a 12.75-inch line they differ by more than threefold:

Formula12.75 in ODWhat it is
Surface per footπ × OD3.34 sq ftThe area you coat
Cross-sectionπ × radius²0.89 sq ftThe area of the opening

A take-off built on the second number under-orders material by roughly a factor of four, and the error survives review precisely because the units look right.

A second confusion worth separating

Searches for pipeline coating cost per foot return a lot of figures in the $80–$250 per linear foot range. Those belong to residential CIPP sewer lining and epoxy pipe lining — trenchless rehabilitation of building drains, with excavation and restoration included. They have nothing to do with mill-applied coating on transmission line pipe, which is priced by surface area and runs in an entirely different band. The pipeline coating cost guide sets out the real ranges by system.

Where the area goes next

Once you have square feet, the coating price follows the system — FBE, 3LPE, 3LPP — and mills quote per square foot or per square metre of pipe surface. One metric note: 1 sq ft = 0.0929 m², so a rate per square metre divides by 10.764 to give the per-square-foot equivalent.
