Surface prep comes first

The coating only lasts if the steel is prepared to the specified SSPC grade and profile (see sandblasting). Prep and controlled film thickness — not the paint brand — determine service life.

Common questions

What coating system do I need?
It's specified to the exposure. Atmospheric steel often uses a zinc-rich primer with an epoxy intermediate and a polyurethane topcoat; immersion or chemical service uses high-build or specialty linings. The environment's corrosivity (ISO 12944) drives the choice.
How long does an industrial paint system last?
A correctly specified and applied system commonly lasts 15–25+ years in atmospheric service before major maintenance. Coastal, chemical and immersion exposure is shorter and needs a heavier system.
Why is prep so important for painting?
Because coatings fail from the substrate up. Blasting to the specified SSPC grade and profile is what lets the primer bond; skip it and even the best paint fails early. Prep is the job, paint is the finish.
