The freeze-thaw + road-salt factor
Chicago's winters put coatings through repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and de-icing salt adds chloride exposure (pushing corrosivity toward ISO 12944 C4–C5-I on exposed steel). That accelerates corrosion on manufacturing equipment, structural steel and the region's dense rail infrastructure, so recoating cycles run shorter than in dry climates.

Exposed structural and equipment steel is commonly protected with a zinc-rich primer, epoxy intermediate and polyurethane topcoat chosen for chloride resistance and thermal cycling. Food and beverage plants are a different job: there the spec shifts to seamless, USDA-acceptable sanitary epoxy or urethane wall and floor systems that survive washdown and meet code.
