How we calculate
We start from a base $/sq ft for the type of work — light/residential ($1–$5), dustless/wet ($1.30–$3.50) or industrial SSPC-spec steel ($8–$16) — and multiply by your area.
Then we apply the factors that actually move a blasting quote: a near-white SP-10 prep grade over a commercial SP-6, field/mobile work over a shop, and required containment each add cost; large areas over 20,000 sq ft earn a volume discount.
The result is a range because the real driver — surface condition (rust grade, number of old coating layers) — is only known after a contractor sees the steel.

What affects the price
Prep grade (SSPC-SP)
A near-white SP-10 finish removes far more material than a commercial SP-6 and takes longer, pushing cost up 15–30%.
Access: shop vs field
Field and mobile work adds mobilization, rigging and lost containment efficiency versus a controlled shop — typically +10–25%.
Containment & environment
Where dust or spent abrasive must be contained (near water, occupied plants, coastal sites), containment adds 10–20% and often pushes toward dustless methods.
Surface condition
Thick rust and multiple old coating layers are the single biggest swing — they push any project toward the top of its range.
