How Much Does Hot Dip Galvanizing Cost?

Hot dip galvanizing is priced by weight, not by area. North American galvanizers typically charge $0.20–$0.50 per pound of finished weight — about $400–$1,000 per ton of steel — according to survey data from American Galvanizers Association (AGA) members. AGA's own economic analyses use a national average of $0.27/lb, which it converts to $2.16 per square foot of coated surface. Where your job lands in that band is driven almost entirely by lot size and part geometry, not by the zinc.

The per-square-foot number is a conversion, not a quote basis: $2.16 is $0.27/lb at about 8 lb of steel per square foot of surface (≈ 250 sq ft per ton), which is typical of heavier structural sections. Light fabrications carry much more surface area per pound, so they consume more zinc per pound and price higher on the per-pound basis.

What affects the price

Steel thickness and surface area

Coating thickness is set by ASTM A123 according to the steel's thickness: Grade 100 (100 µm / 3.9 mils) for structural steel 1/4 in and thicker, Grade 75 and Grade 65 for thinner sections. Because you pay per pound of finished weight, parts with a high surface-area-to-weight ratio — light gauge, gratings, small brackets — pick up proportionally more zinc and price higher per pound. Steel chemistry matters too: silicon and phosphorus levels in the reactive range grow thicker, duller coatings and consume more zinc. Part geometry and complexity

The galvanizing process is a batch process — parts are racked, dipped, drained and cooled — so handling time per piece drives cost. Intricate assemblies, parts needing masking, and anything longer than the kettle (requiring a double dip from each end) all add labor per pound. Fabrications also need vent and drain holes so molten zinc and gases can escape; designing them in beforehand is cheaper than reworking parts the galvanizer can't safely process.

Zinc market price

Zinc is a real input but a smaller share of the bill than most buyers assume. An ASTM A123 Grade 100 coating is 100 µm of zinc; at zinc's density of 7.14 g/cm³ that's roughly 0.15 lb of zinc per square foot of surface. LME zinc traded near $3,529 per tonne (~$1.60/lb) in July 2026 — close to a four-year high — which puts the zinc metal in that coating at about $0.23 per square foot, roughly a tenth of the $2.16 average. Sustained zinc rallies do move quotes, but labor, energy, chemicals and handling dominate the price.

Minimum order and lot size

Galvanizing carries fixed costs per load — kettle time, racking, flux, inspection — that do not scale down. Most galvanizers apply a minimum charge per order, and small mixed lots are priced as custom work: the industry's own framing is that repeat volume prices at several hundred dollars per ton while small, varied lots can price at several thousand per ton. If you have several small jobs, sending them as one load is the single cheapest thing you can do.

Location and transport to the plant

The part travels to the kettle and back, so freight is a genuine line item — industry cost breakdowns put round-trip haul on structural work at roughly $50–$100 per ton, more when the nearest kettle with a large enough bath is out of region. Kettle size is the other geographic constraint: an oversize member may have to travel farther, or be metallized on site instead.

Galvanizing's life-cycle number equals its initial cost because it needs no maintenance over that period — paint systems get recoated. Against shop finishes, powder coating ($1.50–$5/sq ft on simple parts) is cheaper up front but is barrier-only, has no cut-edge protection, and is capped by oven size; field-applied industrial paint systems run $4–$12/sq ft installed. A duplex system costs the most on day one and is chosen when color or extended life justifies it.

  1. A weight list or drawings — piece weights, quantities and overall dimensions (length matters: over-kettle pieces need double-dipping).

  3. The standard you need — A123 for structural, A153 for fasteners and hardware, A767 for rebar.
  4. Schedule and logistics — delivery date, who hauls, and whether pieces ship as one load or several.
